SIOUX CITY -- Helen R. Hord, 88, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. There will be no visitation. Condolences may be sent online to the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.

Helen Ruth was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Christian H. and Mathilda (Casperson) Longlee. She was raised in the Castana area and graduated from Castana High School in 1939. After attending Midwest College of Commerce in Sioux City a short time, she worked at Aalfs Manufacturing Co. sewing government coveralls during World War II. Later, she enlisted in the Purple Heart Division of the Women's Army Corps and was stationed at Schick General Hospital at Clinton, Iowa, and Fitzsimmons Hospital at Aurora Colo.

Helen graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing at Denver, Colo. She was employed as an R.N. office nurse in Onawa, the operating room at St. Vincent Hospital in Sioux City, private duty, Red Cross Nursing in Polio Illinois Research at Chicago, Ill., and Sunrise Manor at Sioux City.

Helen and Everett Hord were united in marriage in 1956 and farmed in Turin, Iowa, and rural Sioux City. Everett passed away July 15, 2007.

Helen was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, and at present was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Survivors include a son, Everett "Gus" Hord Jr.; a sister, Esther Kuhlmann of Whiting, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Mary Knutson, Maxine Thoreson and Lillian Lane; and four brothers, Melvin, Harold, Carl and Clifford Longlee.
