SIOUX CITY -- Richard A. Shultz, 80, of Sioux City passed away Monday, June 21, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church. Chaplain Steve Bensen of St. Luke's Regional Medical Center will officiate. Visitation one hour prior to time of service Wednesday.

Abiding by his wishes, a cremation will follow the service. Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Franklin and Virginia (Sorenson) Shultz. Richard was a versatile athlete in school, and received a scholarship to play football and basketball with the University of Iowa. Richard served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Richard was united in marriage to Beryl Reeve on Nov. 22, 1951, in Iowa City, Iowa. He worked as a banker at the First National Bank of Muscatine, Iowa, and then with the First National Bank of Moline, Ill. In 1981, they moved to Florida where he owned and operated a landscaping business for six years. In May 2008, they moved to Sioux City from St. Petersburg, Fla.

Richard was very active and supportive of the YMCA. Over the years, he was a member of the Rotary and Masonic Lodge. He attended the First Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Richard was an avid golfer and tennis player. Richard was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed the time he could spend with his family and especially the grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife, Beryl; his two daughters, Cheryl and her husband, William Kahler of Elk Point, S.D., and Dawn and her husband, Scott Stephenson of Bettendorf, Iowa; five grandchildren; and his brother, Jack Shultz of Fort Worth, Texas.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard A. Shultz, Jr.; and one daughter, Karen Shultz.
