SIOUX CITY -- Phyllis R. Steil, 81, of Sioux City died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital after developing pneumonia.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Phyllis was born Oct. 23, 1928, in Sioux City. She was raised early in life at St. Anthony's Children's Home, where she learned her skill as a seamstress. In her mid-childhood years, her beloved aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Erickson of the Blair, Neb. area, welcomed her into their home joining their family.

She married William "Bill" Steil on April 22, 1950, in Sioux City. He died April 13, 1995, in Sioux City. She worked at National Supply/Sioux City Stationery as the office manager. She served as executive director for the Port of Sioux City River-Cade Association. She also worked as a librarian for Sacred Heart School.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with many ties to St. Boniface Catholic Church, both in Sioux City. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and held multiple leadership positions both locally and nationally. For more than 50 years, she was involved in local auto racing/officiating which included being the inaugural lead scorer for NASCAR locally, retiring in 2007.

Phyllis loved her garden and sharing her bloomed results with everyone, helping to brighten special events and people's days. She enjoyed auto racing and the many involved and her sewing.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Steil and his wife, Martha of Sioux City and Joe Steil and his wife, Patty of Keokuk, Iowa; and six grandchildren, Kate and her husband, Jacob Joffer, Barb and her husband, Josh Caskey, Jenny, Adam, Kelsey and Billy Steil.

Pallbearers will be Gary March, Gene Florke, Dirk Kirk, Steve Sargent, Tony Drake and Gerry Obregon.
