SIOUX CITY -- Mary Ellen Lowndes, 88, formerly of Sioux City, died peacefully May 4, 2010, at her residence in Overland Park, Kan.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, in Calvary Cemetery at Sioux City.

Mary Ellen was born to Edwin C. Bauer and Monica Ethyl Mallinger Bauer on Dec. 12, 1921, in Barnesville, Minn. She was married to Edwin F. Lowndes for 55 years until his death in 1999. They raised their six children in Sioux City. Edwin worked for Woodbury County for 42 years and was the assistant county engineer.

Mary Ellen and Ed were members of St. Boniface Parish for many years. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, and she organized many other charitable activities for neighbors, friends and family. Mary Ellen was a talented artist and many of her works were displayed by the Art Center at the Sioux City Airport and the Woodbury County Courthouse. The couple retired to Florida and resided there for 20 years.

Survivors include her children, Robert Lowndes of Loveland, Ohio, Gerald Lowndes of Elkhorn, Neb., Mary Ann Fekany of Winter Springs, Fla., Catherine Sappingfield of Gardner, Kan., Teresa Brucker of Louisburg, Kan., and James Lowndes of Alva, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and her sister, JoAnn Hayner of Lutz, Fla.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thomas Bauer of Minnesota, and Daniel Bauer of Wis.
