SIOUX CITY -- Henry C. Groendyk Sr., 68, of Sioux City passed away after a lengthy illness on Monday, June 7, 2010, at a local care center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church, with Chaplain Eudell Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Henry was born Sept. 1, 1941, in Sibley, Iowa, the son of Mike and Carolyn (VanDerWelt) Groendyk. The family moved to Sioux City when Henry was one year old. He attended school in Sioux City, then joined the U.S. Army and served from 1963 to 1966. He returned to Sioux City and worked at Sioux Tools from November 1966 until retirement in 2002.

Henry enjoyed fishing, camping, and his favorite baseball team was the Cubs. He was a member of the American Legion Duane Nelson Post 1981.

Henry is survived by his wife, Janet; three sons, Charles Campbell and his wife, Lori of Moville, Iowa, Roger Groendyk and his wife, Trish of Sioux City and Henry Groendyk of Sioux City; three daughters, Diane and her husband, Dave Sherill of Sioux City, Leslie Groendyk of Sioux City and Andrea Groendyk of Sioux City; his brother, Ed Groendyk and his wife, Jane of Sioux City; and three sisters, Carolyn Beth Keleher of Sioux City, Mary Ann and her husband, Dennis Neave of Toddville, Iowa, and Elizabeth and her husband, Jim Windes of Montgomery, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Shirley; one granddaughter, Paige Groendyk; and one niece, Julie Clemons.
