SIOUX CITY -- Benjamin C. Dicus, 88, of Sioux City died Monday, June 7, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by family.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Tess Panamarow officiating on behalf of Whitfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites.

Benjamin C. Dicus was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Anthon, Iowa, to James and Julia (Clausen) Dicus. He graduated from Anthon High School in 1940.

He married Luella Mae Waugh on Oct. 28, 1941, in Anthon. Luella preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 2003.

Ben was activated to the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in World War II until 1945. He worked at Swift and Co. and Raskins Packing House for many years. During those years, he was the union steward and represented many union workers in the Sioux City area. He was the owner of West Lanes on West Seventh Street in Sioux City.

He was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Sioux City Bowling Association's Hall of Fame in 1972, where he held the high series for the state for many years. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards and just being with his family.

Survivors include four daughters, Diane Spaulding of McCook Lake, S.D., LuAnne Tieck and her special friend, Jim Hoch, RoxAnne and her husband, Denny Sorensen and Connie and her husband, Jeff Larsen, all of Sioux City; three sons, Garry and his wife, Marie of Sioux City, Rick and his wife, Shirley of Wakefield, Neb., and Mike and his wife, Tracy of Sioux City; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Bonner Draper and Jeanette and Richard Martin; a sister-in-law, Charlene Rush; and a brother-in-law, Leonard and Doris Waugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Julia Dicus; his wife, Luella; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Skip Smith; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth "Liz" Dicus; two grandchildren, Scot and Sean Smith; seven brothers; a sister-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Shaun Smith, Corey Spaulding, Damian Dicus, Nick Dicus, Donnie Thompson, Chad Sorensen, Mike Larsen and Kyle Dicus. Honorary pallbearers will be Stephen Smith, Shay Smith, Kolton and Kolby Dicus and Corey McFarland.
