SIOUX CITY -- Wayne E. Monk, 68, of Sioux City passed away Monday, June 21, 2010, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Friendship Community Church, with the Rev. Verlin Schaap and Dr. Thor Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Wayne was born Aug. 30, 1941, in Sioux City, the son of Simeon and Margaret (Pithan) Monk. He attended Central High School.

He married Janet Savage on Nov. 30, 1961, in Sioux City. He worked in various packing houses until retiring in 2000.

He coached and umpired softball for Siouxland Youth Athletics for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards and going to the ballpark. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He was a member of Friendship Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; a son, Todd Monk and his wife, Angel; a daughter, Renee and her husband, Leon Crabtree; three grandchildren, Tristan, Landan and April and her husband, Jason Baldwin; six brothers, Richard of Lawton, Iowa, Larry and his wife, Sherry of Chesterfield, S.C., Gene and his wife, Kathy of Centerville, Iowa, Clem and his wife, Donna of Sioux City, Roger and his wife, Sue of South Sioux City, and Terry and his wife, Jeffra of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Loretta Pauley of Camden, Mo.; four other surviving sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Earl and Charles; and two sisters, Mary Lois and Laverne.
