SIOUX CITY -- Evelyn "Evie" (Oriol) Epstein, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Logan Park Cemetery, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Evie was born Oct. 29, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Libby) Oriol. She graduated from Central High School in 1942, and entered the University of Minnesota at the age of 16. She graduated from that institution with a bachelor's degree in social work. While in school, she was the president of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority. She subsequently received a master's degree from the University of Minnesota in psychiatric social work. She worked as a social worker in rural Hennepin County, Minn.

Evie married Bernard B. Marks in 1950, in St. Paul. They later divorced.

She served as the head of Sioux City's Volunteer Bureau from 1970 to 1978, when she was named director of development for St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. She held that position until 1982, when she moved to New York City's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, where she was the director of Volunteer Services.

Evie then moved to and worked at a hospital in Ventura, Calif., but the ill health of her parents caused her to return to the Twins Cities.

She subsequently moved to her adopted state of Arizona for a time. She married Murray Epstein in July 1997. They later divorced.

Evie was a loyal friend, an accomplished cook and an avid reader. She had a great sense of style and loved duplicate bridge, amassing enough points to be a Life Master. She was a member of the Junior League of Sioux City, American Girls study group, Congregation Beth Shalom and it's predecessor Mount Sinai Temple and was a life member of Hadassah. When she returned to Sioux City more than nine years ago, she enjoyed volunteering at Congregation Beth Shalom and the Sioux City Public Museum. She loved to travel and visiting Israel was a high point in her life.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Evie's family would like to send sincere thanks to her wonderful caregivers at Bickford Cottage, Bickford Memory Care, Home Instead Senior Care, Touchstone Living Center and Hospice of Siouxland.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Marks (William) Conner of Sioux City; two granddaughters, Robin Conner (Jacob) Andersen of Parachute, Colo., and Jillian Conner of Sioux City; a brother, Willard (Esther) Oriol of New York City; an aunt, Celia Miller of St. Paul; a niece, Cathy (Ted) Bruce; three nephews, Seth (Carol) Oriol, Serge (Cassia) Oriol and Peter (Jodie) Oriol; six grandnieces; and two grandnephews.
