SIOUX CITY -- Leslie D. John Torrez, 74, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be noon Thursday at the Oyate Oyanke Center in Santee, Neb. Interment will follow in the Holy Faith Cemetery in Santee. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today and will continue until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Four Directions Center in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 4 p.m. Wednesday and continue until service time on Thursday at the Oyate Oyanke Center in Santee. Sioux City arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service. Arrangements in Santee are under the direction of the Santee Nation Wake and Burial Association.

Leslie was born Nov. 27, 1935, in Winnebago, Neb., the son of Leslie and Victoria (Redwing) Torrez. He joined the Navy at a young age, and retired after 30 years of service. During his enlistments, he served on many ships, including the USS Hornet and USS Hancock. Leslie served in both Korea and Vietnam.

Leslie enjoyed his time socializing and telling stories with his family and friends.

Leslie is survived by his son, Gary Torrez of Rosebud, S.D.; his stepdaughter, Teresa Decory; two sisters, Carmin Keys of Denver, Colo., and Delores Torrez of California; his nieces, Winona Perez Hoffman and Michelle Barrientos of Sioux City; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Winona Torrez, Joann Arrow, Nellie Salia and Lupe Perez; and two brothers, Raymond Torrez and Lee Torrez.
