Bronson, Iowa—Herald R. “Howie” Handke, 70, of Bronson died Sunday, December 31, 1995, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nativity Catholic Church with the Rev. Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Oto, Iowa, with military rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 1973. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. at the Larkin Morningside Funeral Home, Sioux City.

Mr. Handke was born July 14, 1925, in Oto, the son of Henry and Edna (Downing) Handke, and attended school in Oto. He married Mae M. Gotto on May 27, 1953, in Oto. He had lived in Bronson for 37 years. He was a packing house worker in Sioux City for many years, retiring in 1985. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and V.F.W. Post 1973 in Sioux City. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife; one son and his wife, Jim and Sue of Sioux City; one daughter and her husband, Jo Ann and Russell Black of Salix; six grandchildren, Erin and Tyler Handke, and Jesse, Jennifer, Lonnie and Jason Black; three brothers and their wives, Leo and Margaret of Anthon, Donald and Elda and Ross and Barb, all of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Marilla Kelleher of Lawton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Gifford, Lonnie, Tracy, Portis, Philip and Melvin; and four sisters, Ethel Johnson, Delma Nelson, Letha Bottgen and Hattie Handke.

Pallbearers will be Lonnie Black, Jason Black, Dennis Herbst, Bobby Fisher, Dave Pearson and Bill Lewon.
