SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Nelta Ann Tompkins, 75, of rural Smithland passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa, with family by her side.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Hornick United Methodist Church, Hornick, Iowa. The Rev. Catie Newman will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Nelta Ann Tompkins, daughter of Hensman and Margret (Toomsen) Smidt, was born Dec. 13, 1934, in Dubuque, Iowa. She attended a country school near Wall Lake, Iowa, and graduated from George High School in George, Iowa. Nelta continued her education becoming a registered nurse, graduating from Rockford School of Nursing in Rockford, Ill.

Nelta married Anthony Tompkins June 7, 1960, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They moved to the Smithland area in 1961. Nelta enjoyed her career as a nurse, working at Storm Lake Methodist Manor, Willow Dale in Battle Creek, Iowa, and Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting Iowa.

She enjoyed her spiritual studies and was an active member of the Hornick United Methodist Church and choir. Nelta excelled as a speaker. She held the office of president of the Hornick United Methodist Women and vice president of the Sioux City District United Methodist Women.

Nelta is survived by her husband, Tony; two daughters, Laura Reitan (Robert) of Whiting, Iowa, and Alicia Tompkins of Boca Raton, Fla.; two sons, Clarence Tompkins (Kim) of Whiting and Bill Tompkins (Laurie) of Richland, Mo.; one grandson, Sterling Young of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a brother, John Smidt (Lavada) of Parker, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margret and Hensman Smidt.
