SIOUX CITY -- Joan Claire Hicks, 77, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Joan was born Feb. 23, 1933, in Omaha, to Hans and Helen (Bilby) Carstens. As a child, she lived in Omaha before moving to Sioux City in 1945. She graduated from Central High School in 1952, then attended the University of Iowa.

She married Jerry Hicks on April 25, 1953, in Hannibal, Mo. She loved children and worked with pediatrician Dr. James Boysen for 25 years.

She was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter LD and served as president from 2007 to 2009. She was also very active at Central High and was a cheerleader for the 1951 football team. She was a true lady of the castle, who helped plan numerous class reunions, including the 2007 All Class reunion. She attended Unity Circle at First United Methodist Church and was an avid bridge player, who participated in many bridge clubs. She loved to travel with her husband, Jerry, and enjoyed boat racing with him. She loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren. She was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams. She also was a member of the R.E.S.P. (Racer's Emergency Support Program).

Survivors include her husband, Jerry of Sioux City; a son, Robert (Joy) Hicks of Thornton, Colo.; two daughters, Barbara (Scott) Swanson of Orange, Calif., and Nancy (Darrell) Stone of Elk Point, S.D.; a sister, Jackie (Adrian) Roy of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, David, Sarah, Hannah, MacKenzie, Peyton, Kelsey and Sydney; six nephews, Duke, David, Chris, Casey, Dyke and Alexander; and several cousins including Judy, Patty and Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
