SIOUX CITY -- James A. "Bud" Carlberg, 83, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Bud was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Alfred and Julia (Zamberlan) Carlberg. He attended Trinity High School in Leeds. He served with the U.S. Navy during the World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theater. He was later recalled to serve in the Korean War aboard the USS Nehenta Bay.

He married Dorothy Jones on Sept. 26, 1953, in Sioux City. She preceded him in death on Feb. 25, 1991.

He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. He was a lifelong member of the Carpenter's Union Local 948, where he worked as a union carpenter for more than 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 64. He was very generous in donating money to various organizations.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed feeding his squirrels and birds outside his home. He liked going to the Red Room and Princes, where everyone knew him as Mr. C. In his earlier days, he enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and grilling with his family.

Survivors include his four grandchildren, Jim Ringler (Stacey Streeter), Melissa Ringler (Jim Solomon), Ricky Carlberg (Tabatha Houck) and Travis Nelson, all of Sioux City; four great-grandchildren, Jaryn, Anthony, Thomas and Elizabeth; a brother, Leo and Mardee Carlberg of Sioux City; sisters, Mary and Ted Davis, Tana March and Anna Carlberg, all of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Chuck Gerhart of Papillion, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; children, Renee Keleher, Jim Carlberg and Mike Carlberg; a grandson, Tyler Carlberg; two sisters, Ruth Ahrens and Catherine Gerhart; a son-in-law; and a daughter-in-law.

Pallbearers will be his four grandchildren, Todd Erdman and Jim Solomon.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of Siouxland and all of Bud's neighbors for their special care.
