SIOUX CITY -- Jack Russell Kennedy, 92, of Sioux City died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Casa de Paz Care Center in Sioux City.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Jack was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Mitchell, S.D., the son of Hollis and Fern (Russell) Kennedy. He moved to Sioux City with his family, where he graduated from Central High School. He continued his education at the University of Iowa. He was well known for playing football at Central and Iowa. He received a letter to play for the Chicago Bears, but entered the U.S. Army Air Corps instead.

He married Mary Shearman on April 20, 1941. He worked as a supervisor for Iowa Public Service for more than 36 years, retiring in 1982. Mary died Aug. 3, 1988.

He enjoyed working out, sports, lifting weights and was active at the YMCA.

Survivors include six sons, Patrick and Judy Kennedy of Omaha, John Penn of Winnebago, Neb., Mike and Charmaine McCauley of Sioux City, Todd and Brandi McCauley of Apple Valley, Minn., Jim McCauley of Sioux City and Jacob Penn of Macy, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles "Buzz" Kennedy of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis Herbert and Fern Kennedy; his wife, Mary Kennedy; a daughter, Terry Rae McCauley; two brothers, Jim and Gene; and two sisters, Katherine and Bonnie.
