Stanley was born on Jan. 29, 1923, in a farmhouse southeast of Correctionville, to Leslie Ray and Lola Mae (Joy) Fitch, their second of eight children. He quit school during his eleventh year and worked as a farm hand for a few years. In August of 1942, during World War II, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy and attended diesel mechanic school.

They retired in 1989, and moved to town in 2000.

He loved to play all card games with cribbage and double deck three-handed pinochle being his favorite. He also enjoyed playing the guitar with his family and friends, often traveling many miles into neighboring states to play.
