..ANTHON, Iowa -- Bertha S. Chicoine, 103, of Anthon died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Correctionville Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Interment will be in Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Anthon. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. The Armstrong Funeral Home of Anthon is in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha Sophia was born July 25, 1906, in rural Nebraska, near the town of Osmond to pioneers, Hans and Matilda (Tillie Hladik). She was one of six children. When she was seven, the family moved into the town of Osmond. Bertha attended the Osmond Public School, graduating in 1925.

Bertha met the new banker, W.R. "Bill" Chicoine at Osmond. They were married April 8, 1928, at St. Mary's Catholic Rectory in Osmond. They lived in Akron for one year, before Bill was transferred to the First Trust and Savings Bank at Anthon in 1930. This became their lifelong home. Three children were born to this union, Richard Rene, John Louis and Sandra Kay. Bill passed away April 23, 1976. Bertha continued to live in her little house until April of 2002, when she moved to the Correctionville Nursing Home.

Bertha loved visits and calls from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides family, Bertha loved her good neighbors. They were so good to her and she appreciated them. She also took pride in her yard and flowers. She played cards several times a week as well as bingo. In the evenings she loved watching old movies on Turner Classic.

Family left to remember her include her son, Richard Chicoine of Sioux City; a daughter, Sandra Fixsel of rural Pierson, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Jack Chicoine; a daughter-in-law, Billie Chicoine; a son-in-law, Daryl Fixsel; her two brothers and three sisters along with their spouses.
