..LUTON, Iowa -- Harold C. Swingen, 72, of Luton died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be 7 p.m. Monday at the George Nelson American Legion Hall in Sergeant Bluff. Military services will be provided by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the American Legion Hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Harold was born May 9, 1937, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Eric and Verna (Hintz) Swingen. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 and served until 1957. During the 1960s, Harold worked construction, building missile silos in Nebraska for the military. During the 1970s, he had moved to Jefferson, S.D., and worked at the Port Neal Power Plant. He retired in 1997 due to his health.

On Feb. 11, 1994, Harold was united in marriage to Vivian Kunecke in Elk Point, S.D. They lived in Sergeant Bluff, and later moved to Luton. In the late 1980s, Harold went west to California for just over a year, to pan for gold in the mountains.

Harold was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 948 for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the Sergeant Bluff George Nelson Post 662.

Harold is survived by his wife, Vivian; three sons, Mark and his special friend, Scott of Pennsylvania, Mike and his wife, Carla of Sioux City, and George and his wife, Andrea, also of Sioux City; one sister; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
