CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- Sharon K. Hunwardsen, 61, of Correctionville died on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, after a long and courageous fight with ALS. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church of Correctionville, with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in the Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon K. Hunwardsen was born on April 2, 1948, to Gerald and Lucille (Foster) Perkins. She graduated from Correctionville High School in 1966. On May 13, 1967, Sharon was united in marriage to Steve Hunwardsen. To this union two sons were born, Scott and Shane.

Upon graduating from high school, she was employed by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Sioux City. In May of 1975, she started her 30-year banking career at Corn Belt State Bank and continued when it became Union National Bank in Correctionville. She began as a bookkeeper, advancing to head cashier, compliance officer over operations and then to vice president. She also served on the board of directors of Union National Bank. Sharon retired in March of 2006.

Sharon was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served on the church council, was the church treasurer and the advisory co-chair for the finance committee. She also served her community by belonging to CEDCOR, was a member of the board for the Correctionville Chamber of Commerce and was an officer for the Correctionville Housing Corporation. In 2007, Correctionville Chamber of Commerce and CEDCOR named Sharon and her husband, Steve, Honorary Citizens of the Year. Sharon also belonged to a professional women's banker's association.

Sharon was a true advocate for ALS. She participated in the first ALS walk held in Sioux City in 2007 and again in 2008. Sharon will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed every moment spent with family.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Hunwardsen of Correctionville; two sons, Scott (Kathy) Hunwardsen of Correctionville, and Shane (Amber) Hunwardsen of Lawton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Brittany, Ashley, Brooke and Tyler Hunwardsen; her parents, Gerald and Lucille Perkins of Correctionville; a sister, Shirley (Doug) Thompson of Correctionville; her mother and father-in-law, Junior and Betty Hunwardsen of Correctionville; sisters-in-law, Vicki Meyer of Correctionville, Pat (Dan) Meister of Pierson, Iowa, and Mary Caskey of Correctionville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her brothers, Doug Perkins and Gary Caskey; and a brother-in-law, Al (Wiggs) Meyer.
