Services Held For Mrs. Elva (Calkin) Vestal

Mrs. Elva (Calkin) Vestal, 82, of Clear Lake, died Monday, January 21, 1991 at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 25, 1991 at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Bernard Olson and the Rev. Carol Swanson officiating. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel of Clear Lake.

Mrs. Vestal was born February 10, 1908 in Clearfield to Orlando Henry and Ina Marie (Leonard) Calkin. She graduated from Clearfield High School and obtained her bachelor’s degree from Simpson College in Indianola. She advanced her education by attending Morningside College in Sioux City and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She married Clifford Vestal on August 14, 1929 in Clearfield. She taught elementary education and high school home economics for 36 years.

After their marriage they lived in Wales-Lincoln, Iowa for 14 years; Clearfield, Iowa three years; Magnolia, Iowa four years and Climbing Hill, Iowa for 10 years before moving to Ventura in 1959. She then taught in Garner and Thornton, and later at North Iowa Community College in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, Clifford Vestal of Clear Lake; one son, LeRoy Vestal of Kailua, Hawaii; two daughters, Mrs. John (Margaret) Buell, Port Orchard, Washington and Mrs. Jim (Nancy) VandenBoom of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; one brother, Homer Leonard Calkin of Arlington, Virginia; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
