Schleswig, Iowa—Russell Lowell Miller, 72, of Schleswig died unexpectedly Monday, January 3, 2000, at his residence.

Services were held on Friday, January 7, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Visitation and prayer service were held at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Russell Lowell Miller was born March 12, 1927, near Ticonic, Iowa, the son of Claude and Estella (Jenkins) Miller. He grew up in the area and attended Ticonic Grade School and went on to attend Castana High School through the 10th grade.

On August 23, 1945, Russell was united in marriage to Catherine Joan Burkhart at Onawa, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Rodney, Danbury, Mapleton and Schleswig areas. After Russell retired in the fall of 1990, they moved into Schleswig. Joan passed away on December 11, 1997.

Russell was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include a son and his wife, Gary and Vicky Miller of Vinton, Iowa, one daughter, Christine Adkins of Schleswig; three grandchildren, Lori Smith and her husband Matt of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Darrin Miller of Marion, Iowa and Russell Adkins of Ricketts, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Roy and LaVonne Miller of Hornick, and Keith and Alice Miller of Mapleton; three sisters, Freda Lundeen and her husband Waldo and Jeannine Clemson all of Onawa and Carol Hewitt and her husband Frank of Sioux City, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Orlo Johnson of Whiting, Iowa, along with several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with his beloved wife, Russell was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Carey Adkins and three sisters, Bethine Morse, Wilma Johnson and Elizabeth Nutt.
