SMITHLAND, Iowa -- John L. Mack, 73, of Smithland died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital of a heart ailment.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Smithland, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Fighter Wing. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

John was born Sept. 14, 1929 in Oto, Iowa, the son of John Cornelius and Mary Margaret (Carson) Mack. He attended school at Oto Public School and received his GED while serving with the military.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Bowman on Sept. 14, 1954 at United Methodist Church in Smithland. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served with the 185th Iowa Air National Guard at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and retired with 40 years of active and guard military duties as a Food Service Supervisor. He was activated and sent to South Korea from 1968 to 1969 as part of the Korean conflict. He spent five deployments of Team Spirit to Korea.

In his earlier years, he worked for Clark Construction and Price's Lumber at Smithland. He was a school bus driver 27 years for Smithland and Westwood schools and also a carpenter for Duane Clark. John was an avid jelly maker and a volunteer at Pleasant View Care Center at Whiting, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; a son, Richard and his wife, Adelle, of Oto, Iowa; a grandson, Johnathan of Storm Lake, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy and her husband, Keith Benton, of Marcus, Iowa; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Doris, of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Roger and his wife, Barbara Bowman, of Orange Park, Fla.; a beloved aunt, Ethel Johnson of Lawton, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin John; and a sister, JoAnn Bollig.
