SPARKS, Nev. -- Harriett E. Johnson, 85, of Sparks, formerly of Mapleton and Smithland, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at her residence in Sparks following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Harriett E. Johnson was born March 24, 1916, in Carroll, Neb., the daughter of George H. and Cynthia M. Kraft. She graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1933, and furthered her education by graduating from Buena Vista Teachers College in Storm Lake, Iowa. She taught in a one-room school in rural Iowa. While teaching near Smithland, she met and married Harry R. Johnson. To this union, three children were born. In 1957, Harriett moved to Reno, Nev., and was employed with Hartford Insurance for 24 years.

Those survivors left to cherish Harriett's memory include two sons and their families, Duane and his wife, Sandy of Yreka, Calif., and their children, Lori Van Doren and her husband, Steve, and their children, Jacob, Alexandra and Blake, all of Fairfield, Calif., and Gary and his wife, Diana of Davis, Calif., her other son, Douglas H. Johnson of Sparks and his sons, Brendon and Bryce, both of Los Angeles; Harriett's one daughter, Darlene Stravens and her husband, Robert of Hayden, Idaho, their children, Diana Kern and her husband, Kevin and their daughter, Danielle of Springfield, Mo., and son Kelly Stravens and his wife Terri of Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Gerald Kraft of Sun City, Ariz., and Frank Kraft of Mapleton; a sister, Adeline Drenkhahn of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Warren, Clarence and Glenn Kraft; a sister, Thelma Christianson; and two infant siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Hospice Care, 3605 Grant Dr., Reno, Nev. 89503.
