SLOAN, Iowa - Paul L. Maynard, 79, of Sloan died Monday, April 9, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Congregational Church of Christ in Sloan, with the Rev. M. Suzanne Miller officiating. Bu-rial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 666 of Smithland. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home in Sloan.

Mr. Maynard was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Smithland, the son of John and Mabel (Gallop) Maynard. He attended schools in Rodney, Iowa, and graduated from Smithland High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed with the 5th Air Force in the Southwest Pacific. He was discharged as a technical sergeant. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the New Guinea Papaun Campaign Ribbon.

He married Alice Lorine Kruger in June 1947, in Wichita, Kan. She died April 2, 1973, in Sioux City.

He owned a grocery and hardware business in Smithland for several years. He was employed with the Iowa Department of Transportation as a mechanic until retiring in 1984.

He married Gloria June Miltenberger on May 29, 1982, in Denver, Colo.

He was a member of United Congregational Church of Christ and American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 666. He enjoyed World War II memorabilia and carpentry. He was a volunteer at Mid America Air Museum.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jarry of Omaha, Kristan and his wife, Karla of Indianapolis, Ind., and Craig of Watson, Colo.; two daughters and their husbands, Pam and Arch Worrell of Aurora, Colo., and Sheri and Rod Yockey of Sloan; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Vicki and Monty Brown of Sheldahl, Iowa, Nancy and Terry Small of Salix, Iowa, and Cindy and Tim Bakke of Sloan; a stepson and his wife, Mark and Cynthia Miltenberger of Kansas City, Mo.; seven stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Vera and Eva; three brothers, Leonard, Arvin and Leslie; and an infant granddaughter.
