Smithland, Iowa—Francis C. Welte, 81, of Smithland, died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa. Burial will be in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery in Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present at 7 p.m. and a rosary led by family members at 7 p.m. at Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa.

Mr. Welte was born November 13, 1917, in Danbury, Iowa, the son of Frank and Kate (Uhl) Welte. He attended Danbury Public School, graduating in 1935. He entered the United States Army on Feb 10, 1941, and served during World War II. He served for five years overseas where he earned five bronze stars in the African and Italian Campaigns.

After the war he returned to Smithland where he owned and operated Welte Implements for 40 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Lesley F. Seaton American Legion Post 0666 in Smithland. He was also a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet of Smithland, a daughter, Dr. Laura and her husband, Jeff Thoma of Memphis, Tenn; a grandson, Jeremiah Beisner; two brothers and their wives, Louis and LaMona Welte of Anthon, Iowa and Claire and Vera Welte of Danbury, Iowa; four sisters, Leone Morgan of Danbury, Helen and her husband, Burt Tweed of Shelton, Wash., Kay Dandurand and Pauline and her husband, Walter Scott, all of Salix, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Welte of Whiting, Iowa.
