Rodney, Iowa—Zella Zellena Christensen, 96, of Rodney died Monday, March 29, 1999 at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Rodney United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Karen Handke and the Rev. Dennis Mix officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will resume at 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Christensen was born September 4, 1902 in Rodney, the daughter of John R. and Almira Sophea (Bennett) Patterson. She was raised in the Rodney area.

She married Joseph Leo “Lefty” Werling in October 1921 in Mitchell, S.D. She later married Carl Christensen.

She was a member of Rebecca Lodge, Royal Neighbors of America and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 651 of Oto, Iowa.

Survivors include a son, James J. “Jerry” Werling of Whiting, Iowa; a daughter, Margie Craig of Rodney; five grandchildren, James, Doug and Zella Craig, Carmen Carda and Beth Ryan; six great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers, a son and a great-grandson.
