Smithland, Iowa—Ida Johnston, 92, of Smithland died Saturday, Feb 22, 1997, at the Matney Morningside Manor in Sioux City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Smithland. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Willman Funeral Home of Rodney, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Johnston was born April 6, 1904, in Kewanee, Illinois, the daughter of Noah and Lucy (Brown) Bowman. She came to Smithland in the early 1940s.

She had been a cook at the Smithland School for many years.

She married Kenneth Johnston on August 28, 1965 in South Dakota. He died March 30, 1988 in Sioux City.

She was a member of United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a stepson, Lamoine Johnston; a stepdaughter, Gaynell Catterson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Noah, John, Sam and Paul; her brother’s son, Jerry Bowman, whom she raised from infancy and three sisters, Irene Groves, Ruby Barngrover and Lucy Bowman.
