Mapleton, Iowa—Helen Marie Peterson, 92, of Mapleton died Friday, August 9, 1996 in SIoux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Smithland (Iowa) United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Handke, church pastor officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Chapel in Mapleton. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service, followed by an American Legion Auxiliary service by Leslie Seaton Post 666 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peterson, the former Helen Hjort, was born March 1, 1904, the daughter of Andrew and Anna Hjort, near Wayne, Nebraska. She moved with her family to Smithland in 1910 and graduated from Smithland High School in 1922. She married Earl Scott on September 26, 1929. The couple lived in Smithland and later in Whiting, Iowa. She married Carl Peterson on August 27, 1946. They farmed in the Hornick, Iowa, area.

Mrs. Peterson was a member of Smithland United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, and a 51-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Smithland.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Bonnie and James Moran of McCook Lake; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Scott.
