Graveside Services Held Tuesday For Raymond Strong

Raymond J. Strong, 79, of Bronson died Thursday, December 23, 1999 at a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness.

Burial and graveside services were at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City with the Rev. Bruce Jackson of Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, Iowa, officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by Monahan Post 64, American Legion. Christy-Smith funeral Home, Sioux City, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Strong was born July 12, 1920, in Sergeant Bluff, the son of Ray Albert and Hattie Eleanor (Allen) Strong. He attended schools in Sergeant Bluff and Salix, Iowa.

He married Dorothy E. Lunz on January 10, 1954 in Martinsburg, Neb. He lived in Sioux City from 1954 until 1960 when he and his wife moved to the family farm near Bronson where he farmed until his retirement in 1978.

A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy on August 17, 1938 and was a tail gunner on the USS Oklahoma when it was bombed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He served in the South Pacific Theater until his discharge on November 17, 1945.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Dona and Richard Roland of Allen, Neb; a son and his wife, Jim and Diane Strong of Missouri Valley, Iowa; a sister, Eleanor Armstrong of Glendale, Ariz; five grandchildren, Cory Tomlinson, Kristin Tomlinson, Dylan Roland, Matt Strong and Andrea Strong and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sandra Sue Strong.
