Dr. Paul J. Johnson, 74, longtime Sioux City orthodontist, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha from complications following a routine surgery.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Paul Johnson was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Julius and Delphine (Leonard) Johnson. He was raised in Odebolt, Iowa, and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1945. He attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, and received his bachelor of science degree from Park College in Parkville, Mo., in 1949. He entered the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and graduated in 1953. He then served in the U.S. Air Force where he practiced dentistry until 1955.

He married Ardys L. Deyloff on Sept. 2, 1951, in Aurelia, Iowa. The couple made their home in Le Mars, Iowa, where he practiced dentistry from 1955 until 1963. He returned to the University of Iowa School of Orthodontics and graduated in 1965. The couple relocated to Sioux City in 1965, where he practiced orthodontics in partnership with Wagner, Johnson and Rasmus. He also had a satellite office in Yankton, S.D. He retired from the practice in 1996.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping and boating. He served on various community and church boards. He was an advocate at Holy Spirit Retirement Home and also served in several positions with the Northwest Iowa Dental Society.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Iowa Orthodontic Society, Iowa Dental Society, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, Sahibs, Scottish Rite and York Rite. He was a past 50-year Masonic Lodge member.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ardys; a daughter, Patty and her husband, Dr. John Batter of Omaha, and grandchildren, Sara, Amanda and Thomas; a son, Paul Jr. and his wife, Lori of Omaha, and granddaughters, Kayla and Jenna; and a brother-in-law, Gregg Deyloff of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Richard Wagner, Dr. Robert Rasmus, Gregg Deyloff, John Dirks, Winton Buckley and William Sturges.

Memorials in Paul J. Johnson's name may be directed to the family to be distributed to local charities.
