Adela A. Baak, 98, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Countryside Retirement Community in Sioux City following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Russell Senstad, Paul Mueller and David Zirpel officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Adela A. Baak was born Dec. 25, 1904, in Charter Oak, the daughter of Herman and Lizzie (Peters) Garbe Sr. She attended parochial school at St. John's Lutheran in Charter Oak.

She married Chris Ullerich on Nov. 14, 1926, in Charter Oak. She was a farm wife while living in Charter Oak. In 1932, the couple moved to Sioux City. Chris passed away Sept. 5, 1956, in Charter Oak.

She married Helmuth Baak on Jan. 27, 1962, in Sioux City. He passed away Dec. 27, 1964. While living in Sioux City, she worked as a cook and cashier for Armour Packing Co. for over 20 years. She also had various other jobs within Sioux City. She became a resident of Countryside Retirement Community in 2001.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she was active in the ladies church groups. She also was a caregiver for her brother, John, for many years. She enjoyed sewing and quilting with the church ladies.

Survivors include four nephews, Stephen Garbe and his wife, Grace, of Springfield, Va., Richard Garbe of Sioux City, Bruce Garbe and his wife, Patti, of Sioux City and Robert Meyer and his wife, Phyllis, of Sioux City; a niece and her husband, Lois and Glen Lewis of Chicago, Ill.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Barbara and Ralph Junck of Sioux City and Sharon and Lee Warne of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Herman Garbe Jr. of Denison, Iowa; seven stepgrandchildren; and many great-nieces, great-nephews and great-stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two brothers, John and Leonard Garbe; three nephews, Phillip Nemitz, Richard O. Meyer and James Nemitz; and two sisters, Agnes Nemitz and Elsie Meyer.

Pallbearers will be Terry Vogt, Tim Hennings, Grant Garbe, Richard Garbe, Bruce Garbe and Ronald Junck.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
