Richard James Hanson, 77, of Deshler, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Thayer County Health Services Hospital in Hebron, Neb.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler.

Richard James Hanson, the son of George A. and Rebecca J. (Pursell) Hanson, was born June 25, 1925, at O'Neill, Neb. Dick worked at Armour Packing in Sioux City and for the city of Sioux City as a tree arborist. He was a supervisor in the IBP supply department and also worked for Ray Freidman in the poultry business as well as driving truck for Sherman Beef & Poultry.

He was united in marriage to Mary Bales and later divorced. He was married to Lela Lucart until her death in 1987.

He then moved to Deshler, where he was confirmed on June 30, 1996, at St. Peter Lutheran Church by the Rev. James Moll. His confirmation verse was Matthew 21:22. He was united in marriage to Velma F. Schultz on July 20, 1997, at St. Peter Lutheran Church by Rev. Moll. Dick owned and operated the lumber yard in Ruskin, Neb., and did carpentry work and painting. He also owned D & D Cafe in Deshler for one year.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and American Legion Halfman Post 352 of Deshler.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicky Scott and her husband, Roger of Fleetwood, N.C., and Charlene Green and her husband, Mike of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Virgil Hanson and his wife, Diane of Belle Plain, Minn., and Steve Hanson and his wife, Theresa of Bronson, Iowa; two brothers, Robert Hanson and his wife, Eileen, and Kenneth Hanson and his wife, Gladys, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Delores Wiseanan of Sioux City, and Betty Desterhouse of Valley, Neb; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lela in 1987; his wife Velma on Feb. 7, 1998; two brothers, Clarence and Edward; and a sister, Julia Valinga.

Pallbearers will be Roger Scott, Mark Reeves, Virgil Hanson, Steve Hanson and Robert Hanson.

Memorials have been established to the family's choice.
