ANTHON, Iowa -- Eva E. Karhoff, 94, of Anthon died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. William Schreiber officiating. Burial will be in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m., a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. followed by an American Legion Auxiliary service, all at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Eva Edith Karhoff was born March 13, 1908, in Lake City, Iowa, the daughter of James K. and Katherine (Redenius) Sharkey. She moved with her family to Danbury, where she grew up and received her education.

On April 25, 1927, she was united in marriage to Bernard Karhoff at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Danbury. In 1936 they moved to Anthon, where they farmed until Bernard's death on Dec. 16, 1954. She moved into Anthon in 1965, where she worked as a cook at the Anthon school and in several restaurants. She also worked as a janitor at Anthon-Oto School in Anthon.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar Society. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit 389 of Anthon, along with several card clubs. She did a great deal of sewing and making crafts, skills in which she demonstrated a true talent. She enjoyed playing bingo but was especially happy when she would baby-sit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Grandma Great."

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include a son and his wife, Bob and LaVonne Karhoff of Pocahontas, Iowa; two daughters, Marian and her husband, Albert Sevening and Katherine "Dottie" Maguire, all of Anthon; 10 grandchildren, Mike Karhoff and his wife, Rose of Pocahontas, Kevin Karhoff and his wife, Jean of Omaha, Jeff Karhoff and his wife, Shirley of Milwaukee, Wis., Pat Maguire and his wife, Freda of Anthon, Tim Maguire and his wife, Michele of Bloomington, Minn., Becky and her husband, Jim Venteicher of Anthon, Kate Maguire Stessman of Omaha, Polly and her husband, Allan Pithan of Anthon, Faye and her husband, Bryan Hill of Anthon, and Sue and her husband, Tom Lewis of Estherville, Iowa; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Newman, who resides at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa, and Rose and her husband, Frank Franzkowiak of Ida Grove, Iowa.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Leo Maguire; a grandson-in-law, Jim Stessman; and five brothers and three sisters.
