Gertrude Hoversten, 100, of Sioux City died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Hoversten was born May 18, 1902, near Emmetsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Patrick Francis and Ottilla (Weibel) Carroll. She grew up on a farm near Emmetsburg and attended grade school and high school in Emmetsburg. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa Normal School, now known as University of Northern Iowa, and taught country school in 1920.

She married Joseph Hoversten on Dec. 28, 1929, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in Minnesota and Iowa, until 1941, when they moved to Sioux City. She taught at St. Boniface Grade School for 17 years, retiring in 1974. Mr. Hoversten died Nov. 5, 1968, in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and enjoyed sewing and quilting.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Francis and Joan Hoversten of Platte, S.D., Louis and Wanda Hoversten of Cainsville, Mo., and Bernard and Dorothy Hoversten of Platte, S.D.; three daughters, Sister Mary Colleen Hoversten, O.S.F., of Dubuque, Iowa, Martha Jean and her husband, Leo Uhl, of Danbury, Iowa, and Bernice and her husband, John Kubal, of Brookings, S.D.; a sister, Coletta Shearer of Sioux City; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter; a brother, Francis "Babe" Carroll; and a grandson, Joseph Hoversten.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Greg Hoversten, James Kubal, Craig and Andy Hatler, Phillip Kubal, David Uhl and Matthew Kubal. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom, Patrick and Mike Hoversten.

A memorial will be established in her name.
