Rupert Thorpe was born May 17, 1917, in Moville, Iowa, son of Charles and Eula May (Cook) Thorpe. He was raised in Moville and graduated from Moville High School in 1936. Entering the service in April of 1943 he served in Africa and Italy and returned home in December of 1945. He purchased a grocery store in Salix in September of 1940. He also worked for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was appointed Salix Postmaster in 1969 and served as Salix Fire Chief from 1966 until 1981.

Mr Thorpe married Dorothy Henrich on December 3, 1941, at LeMars, Iowa. Dorothy, the daughter of Martin and Katie (Conradi) Henrich, was born September 7, 1916, at LeMars. She grew up on a farm near LeMars and graduated form LeMars High School in 1934. Dorothy taught school in Plymouth County for six years. She ran Thorpe’s Grocery for thirty-five years, retiring and closing the store in June 1983. They are the parents of six children.

Carol Ann, born in Los Angeles, California, September 17, 1942, attended St Joseph School at Salix, graduating in 1960. Carol lives in Reno, Nevada, and has worked for GM for twenty years.

Beverly, born in Sioux City, December 14, 1946, graduated from Westwood High School in 1965. She worked at Bellas Hess eleven years, and now works at the Sergeant Bluff Post Office.

Roxann, born in Sioux City, March 17, 1948, graduated from Westwood High School in 1961. She was married in September, 1966, to Donald Glayton of Sloan, Iowa, and works at Rochester Products in Sioux City. Their two children are Scott, 16, and Dawn, 12. They live at Salix.

Pamela, born June 30, 1950, at Sergeant Bluff, graduated from Westwood School in 1968 and from Briar Cliff College in 1972 with a B S in Physical Education. She lives in San Francisco, California. Charles, born in Sergeant Bluff, April 17, 1953, graduated from Westwood in 1971 and was married in 1975. He works at Wilson Trailer in Sioux City, and has one daughter, Stephanie, 6.

Marc was born in Sioux City, February 5, 1958. He graduated from Westwood in 1976 and attended Morningside College. Now living in San Francisco, California, he works for the Bank of America, Leasing Division.
