Fred and Sarah (Adams) Shever

Fred Shever was born June 10, 1860, at Clinton, Iowa. His parents were both born in Germany and came to Clinton County, Iowa, where they raised their family. Fred had two brothers: Jake Shever of Audubon, Iowa; and Gomas Shever of Eastern Iowa.

Fred married Sarah Adams on June 12, 1883, at the Clinton County Court House. They were married by George Brenizer, JP. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Susan Senenger Pieper Adams and was born February 6, 1864, at Clinton, Iowa.

Fred and Sarah came to Rock township, rural Correctionville, in 1883, from Clinton County with a covered wagon, team of horses, a walking plow, a few personal belongings and 50 cents in his pocket. They lived and broke the sod on the farm now occupied by their great-grandson, Ronnie Lewis, and family.

Fred and Sarah are the parents of ten children, all of them being born on the home place in Rock Township. Still living is a son, Oscar, and his wife, Mary, of rural Anthon, and daughters-in-law, Mrs. Hulda Shever of Maple Heights Care Center of Mapleton; Mrs. Fern Shever Paulson of Correctionville; and Mrs. Mabel Shever of Cushing.

Rose Ella was born March 14, 1884, and married Arthur Augustus Downey, July 15, 1903. Arthur was born May 30, 1883. They are the parents of four children: Violet who died at the age of five days; Mrs. John ‘Edna’ Guthridge of Peterson; Roy, of Correctionville; and Fred, Anthon.

Earl Thomas was born November 10, 1885, and married Myrtle L Worthan, June 3, 1907. Myrtle was born November 16, 1890. They are the parents of five children: Ervin and Mrs. Virgil ‘Maxine’ Wright, both of Correctionville; Alvin and Kenneth, both of Anthon; and Mrs. Ray ‘Gwen’ England of Kellogg.

Tressie Forthy was born July 4, 1888, and married Earl Walrod in September of 1905. Earl was born January 21, 1881. They are the parents of seven children: Mrs. Anson ‘Della’ Juelfs of Cushing; Virgil of Mountain View, California; Oscar was reported missing in action, August 3, 1944; Roger of Sunnyvale, California; Alfred of San Clara, California; and Ruby and Roberta in Oregon.

Ernest John was born February 12, 1891, and married Etta Hinkhouse, January 27, 1914. Etta was born August 22, 1891. They are the parents of two children: Darrell, of Moville; and Mrs. Art ‘Dorothy’ Deming of Correctionville.

Howard William was born January 27, 1893, and married Hulda Dorothea Schmidt, January 8, 1919. They are the parents of two children: Mrs. Dean ‘Della Dorothy’ Wenger; and Merlin Marvin, who died April 5, 1945, while serving in the US Army.

Mabel Grace was born December 15, 1892, and married John Henry Sobieski, April 18, 1917. John was born September 18, 1894. They are the parents of two children: Russell, and Mrs. Harold ‘Lucille’ Beeson, both of Correctionville.

Oscar Fred was born January 29, 1896, and married Mary Kathryn Burgess, February 8, 1922. Mary was born December 18, 1903. They are the parents of four children: Mrs. Robert ‘Marjorie’ Goodman, of Battle Creek; Maurice, of Cushing; Marvin, of Phoenix, Arizona; and Mrs. David ‘Carole’ Rambo, of Decorah.

Herbert Elmer was born September 18, 1900, and married Fern Verla Strawn of February 29, 1905. They are the parents of two children: Mrs. Darold ‘Donna’ Hansen, and Darwin, both of Correctionville. Fern married Harry Fredrick Paulson on February 11, 1970.

Albert Allen was born February 16, 1903, and married Mabel Evelyn Lloyd on August 7, 1929. Mabel was born July 16, 1905. They are the parents of four children: Mrs. Delores Rasachi of Fresno, California; Delbert of Cushing; Mrs Richard ‘Janice’ Messer of Neola; and Mrs. Paul ‘Lois’ Kistenmacher of Galva.

Lila Florence was born July 3, 1907, and married Harley Albert Lewis, September 19, 1925. Harley was born July 16, 1905. They are the parents of three children: Mr. Virgil ‘Lorraine’ Bottjen of Anthon; Everett of Cushing died July 2, 1978, of a heart attack; and Donald of Sioux City.

All of the children attended Rock Township School for their early education.

Fred died October 28, 1942, at the Cushing Hospital of a heart ailment and Sarah died January 9, 1941, at her farm home of a stroke. Both are buried at the Correctionville cemetery.
