William Henry Shepheard
By Loraine E Washburn

William Henry Shepheard was born 14 March 1844 in Carroll County, Indiana. He was the son of Andrew and Nancy Shephard, the father born in Ireland, and the mother in Ohio. William lived in Carroll County until at least after 1850. He served in the Civil War, enlisting at Janesville, Iowa. Entering service on October 15, 1861, at Iowa City, he served in: Co A, 14th IA Inf; Co A, IA Inf; and Co K, 7th IA Cav. His cavalry records show that he served in Dakota territory from 1864 until his discharge on 22 June 1866. During this time he was stationed at Fort Sully, and later at Sioux City, where he ran a ferry boat.

He was married 6 April 1867 at the home of Mendall Metcalf of Woodbury County, to Angeline Metcalf, the daughter of Mendall and Rachel nee Munks. The couple remained in Woodbury County until their deaths, and for many years owned a farm consisting of forty acres in Section 14, and forty acres in Section 23 in Grange township, Woodbury County. Descendants have a note in the amount of $500, drawn on the German Savings Bank of Davenport, Iowa, by William and Angeline Shepheard, on 14 January 1887, showing payment until 19 January 1900 with which they purchased the land.

William died at his home there on 5 January 1905, and is buried at Climbing Hill, Iowa. Angeline remained on the farm until her last illness, when she went to live with a daughter in Sioux City.
