John and Vivian (Flemming) Sevening

John E ‘Bud’ Sevening was born at Danbury, Iowa, on April 11, 1920, to John and Angela (Collins) Sevening. He was the third of four children: Dorothy Carr, Eileen Sokolowski, ‘Bud’, and Albert Sevening. He was educated in the rural schools near Danbury. During World War II, he served four years with the Air Force, entering in 1941. On June 10, 1947, he married Vivian Flemming.

Vivian was born December 21, 1922, to Paul and Mary (Carr) Flemming at Correctionville. She is the ninth and last child of the Flemmings: Leo, deceased, Lucille, deceased, Irene Hart, Clarence, Gerald, Pauline, deceased, Wilfred, and Vivian. She graduated from Correctionville High School in 1940, and taught in the rural schools near Correctionville for six years.

John and Vivian farmed near Correctionville till 1960 when they moved to a farm just north of Cushing, Iowa, that they purchased from the Otto Briese Estate. They are the parents of three children, Phillip, Carol, and Keith.

Phillip was born April 16, 1948. He graduated from Cushing High School in 1966, the last class to graduate from Cushing before Consolidation. He joined the 185th Air National Guard in 1967 and served twelve months on active duty at Phu Cat, Vietnam. ‘Phil’ married Edna Ashmore on December 13, 1965. She is the oldest of three daughters born to Robert D and Dorothy L (Brune) Ashmore. She graduated in 1968. Before her marriage she worked in the business office of St Vincent Hospital in Sioux City. Since 1974 she has worked for Jacob’s Agency in Correctionville.

Phil and Edna have three children: Kimberly Louise, born June 3, 1970; Kara Michelle, born April 29, 1974; and Robert John, born May 22, 1979. Phil and Edna are currently engaged in farming south of Cushing. In 1977 they purchased the Joe and Cleola farm, where Edna’s father and was born and lived with his parents, Howard and Edna (Heath) Ashmore until the age of eight.

Carol was born March 27, 1951, and graduated in 1969. She married John Lane, December 4, 1976, and is currently living in Branson, Missouri.

Keith was born February 16, 1955, and graduated in 1973. He served two years in the Marine Corps, from 1974 to 1976. He married Joyce Brown, daughter of Merwin and Eva (Dunn) Brown of Elk Point, South Dakota. Joyce was also a 1973 graduate of Eastwood High. They have three children: Tammy, born October 8, 1979; Michael, born December 25, 1980; and Stephanie, born November 4, 1982. They are currently living in the former Joe Schreur farm, and Keith is employed in Sioux City.

All are members of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein.
