Johanne (Steinhoff) Rose

Johanne ‘Jane’, first daughter of Henry and Julia (Yost) Steinhoff, and husband Frederick J Rose, son of Jacob and Margaret Rose, came to the Germany City community in 1881. They settled on what has been more recently known as the Louis Sulsberger farm. Fred died young, at the age of 64, of a sudden heart attack while sitting in a chair waiting for breakfast. After his death, son Otto worked the farm for wages of $100 per year. Daughter, Minnie, did chores and the housework for $50 per year. Later Jane and her son, Henry, and daughter, Minnie, moved to the town of Hornick. Minnie Hansen remembers her grandmother washing clothes in the creek without soap. She ‘Jane’ said one didn’t have to go dirty.

Jane and Fred had nine children.

1( John H Rose married Helen Camp. They adopted a daughter, Helen Jane Julia.

2( Henry Rose

3( Julia Rose married John Kochert, brother of Elizabeth Kochert Steinhoff. Their children were Bertha Hunt, Freda Hansen, Rose Westerman, Henrietta ‘Yetta’ Morgan, Elmer, Laura Cardner, Clarence, Edna Cooper, Antoinette ‘Annetta’, Clara Allphin, Iva, Elsie Leadbetter, and Elna.

4( Louisa married John W Burkhart. Their children were Clarence, Mina ‘Minnie’ Hansen, Frank, Pauline Hansen and Marvin, who only lived eight months, died of spinal meningitis.

5( Edward G Rose married Ella Eichhorn. Their children were Fredrick and Marvin.

6( George Rose married Gertrude Eichhorn, sister of Ella. Their children were Clyde and Paul.

7( Minnie Rose

8( Frederick Albert Rose, died at age 21 of sunstroke.

9( Otto Jacob Rose married Edna Koontz.
