James ‘Jim’ Newman, son of Charles Newman and Olive (Burke) Newman, was born at Anthon, Iowa, January 18, 1928. Jim farmed with his father by Anthon and Oto and graduated from Oto High School in 1945. He joined the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City in 1949, activated to Air Force in April 1951, and was stationed at Bangor, Maine, Wichita Falls, Texas and Alexandria, Louisiana.

Jim married Maxine Schleis, daughter of Andrew and Katherine (Anthony) Schleis of Mapleton, November 28, 1950. Maxine was born April 19, 1929, and lived with her parents on a farm north of Mapleton, graduated from Mapleton High School in 1946.

Jim was discharged from the Air Force in November 1952 and his wife moved to Wichita, Kansas, where they worked in aircraft plants. In September 1954, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and worked at American Airlines and Douglas Aircraft. Jim also attended Spartan School of Aeronautics and obtained his Aircraft and Engine (Powerplant) License.

In the spring of 1963 they decided to move back to Iowa and found work at an airport in Boone, Iowa, for about one year and then moved to Sioux City. Jim again joined the Iowa Air National Guard in December 1963 and was employed at Graham Aircraft Service until he was employed full time with the Guard Unit as an Air Technician in September 1964; he is still employed there.

In the spring of 1967, they moved five miles east of Salix on the Ted Ericksen farm. In May 1968, the Guard Unit was again activated and Jim was sent to Vietnam for one year. In 1970, they moved to town in Salix and lived in the Methodist Church house until May of 1978 when they bought the Harold Christensen place north edge of Salix. Maxine had worked at Zenith until December 1975, and was hired as City Clerk of Salix in January 1977, and is still employed there.

Maxine and Jim had six children. James, Jr, born December 21, 1954, at Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduated from Westwood High School in 1973. He attended four years college at Morningside College and now is with the USS Navy based at San Diego, California. He married Karen Argubrigth, September 19, 1982, at San Diego. Karen’s parents, Jim and Adis {Ardis} Argubright, were originally from Lake Okoboji, Iowa.

Jack, born August 31, 1956, at Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduated form Westwood High School in 1974. He worked for Iowa Parcel, attended Morningside College one year and moved to San Francisco, California, January of 1978. Jack was employed at the Bank of America until is death on April 17, 1981; he is buried in St Joseph Cemetery in Salix.

Jerald, born January 8, 1959, at Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduated from Westwood High School in 1976. He is employed at Chesterman’s and living in Salix.

Jeffery was born June 5, 1961, at Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Westwood High School in 1978; he is now with US Army Paratroops based at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

Jana, born February 27, 1963, at Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduated from Westwood High School in 1981, and attended college at Vermillion, South Dakota, and Briar Cliff, Sioux City. She is now employed at Social Services in Sioux City. Jana married David Drew on May 21, 1983, and they are living in Sioux City.

Jolene, born March 3, 1965, at the Old St Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, graduated from Westwood High School in 1983, and is working part-time at the Oasis and living at home.
