I’ve lived in Woodbury County all my life except for one and a half years when I followed my husband at work at Consolidated Steel in San Pedro, California, and one and a half years when he was in the Army at New Orleans and St Louis, all during World War II.

I grew up on ‘Top o’ the Hill’ at 2746 Virginia Street, Sioux City, Iowa. My parents were Judge Charles Lionel Lockie and Mary Avis Baker Lockie. They were married February 12, 1907, and were divorced in 1930. Dad remarried to Elsie Chandler. My brother, Charles ‘Lionel’ Lockie was killed in a fall at work in October 1962. My step-brother, Harold Lockie, is a retired Navy man, living in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

I married David J Lowery on June 22, 1935. We eloped! Dave was a maintenance stationary engineer and worked for Metz Baking Company, Cudahy Packing Company, St Vincent’s Hospital and the Lutheran Hospital, where he was Chief Engineer at the time of his death. He died of an aortic aneurysm and kidney failure due to illness contracted on Leyte in 1945. Dave was engineer on an emergency rescue boat in the Pacific. He was in the Army, attached to the Air Force, and wore a Navy uniform on duty. Dave was a retired warrant officer, 1946.

I still live on Brown’s Lake in the home Dave and I built after World War II. My many hobbies keep me busy—I taught Dresden painting three years for adult education classes in Sioux City. I taught ceramics ten years at Davelen Ceramic Shop and decorated many dinner tables for the Salix Community Methodist Church and Sioux City Community Theater.

Dave and I have two children: David Norman and Jane Helen. David Norman Lowery, born August 22, 1951, lives in Enid, Oklahoma, working for the city. He married Jacqueline Lewis on December 27, 1979, and they have one daughter, Jacquelin Elizabeth, born December 20, 1983. David has another daughter by a previous marriage, Laura Sue Lowery, born February 4, 1977.

Jane Helen Lowery was born September 27, 1957, and lives in Salix. She married Steve Arlan Tomlinson on July 3, 1976. He works for Boone Valley Coop Soy Processing as an operator. They have two sons: Jason Matthew, born August 30, 1976; and Clinton Arlan, born March 16, 1981.
