Miner Burton Mead was born April 1, 1818, at Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York, to Israel Mead (believed to be of English descent) and Elizabeth Newman. Miner died January 15, 1886, at Oto, Iowa. He had light brown hair and gray eyes. He was a farmer. He went to California in 1849 to the Gold Fields. He was a Methodist. HE bought many acres of land in Iowa.

He married Mary Locke, born February 11, 1824, in Indiana, to Abraham Locke (born 1802 in Kentucky) and Sarah (born 1802 in Virginia). Mary died December 19, 1859, and was buried in Oto, Iowa. Hers was the first grave in the Oto Cemetery.

Miner married Mary Turman, born January 18, 1843, in Madison, Wisconsin, to William Turman (born May 2, 1798, in Virginia to John Turman and Rachel Jones) and Mary Turman, a cousin, (born January 3, 1805, died May 17, 1885, at Oto, Iowa, born to Charles Turman). She had dark brown hair, gray eyes, was short and played a musical instrument. She died December 13, 1903, and is buried at Oto, Iowa.

Their children were: Erastus, Emily M, Marion, Olive Jane, Achilles C., Plato, Infant Son, George, Ola, William H, Dan, Bertha, Eliza Josephine, Betsy Ann, Harry, Mable Agnes, Calvin Miner, Katharine F and Charles A.

Many of the descendants of Miner B Mead are living in Woodbury County, today.
