History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Raoul and Marie Huot
By Kathryn Huot

Raoul Huot was born August 5, 1878, at Beloiel, Canada, to Javeride Arthur and Amelia Meyler Huot. He was a graduated of Laval University at Montreal. At age eighteen, he received his degree as a veterinary surgeon, and dentist. In 1900, he came to Salix and practiced his profession, but devoted a great part of his time to farming.

On April 11, 1904, Raoul and Miss Marie Louise Hubert, daughter of Napoleon and Rosanna Pepin Hubert and granddaughter of Francis and Aglae LaCroix Hubert, were married in the old St Joseph’s Church. Marie had attended St Joseph’s Church. Marie had attended St Joseph’s School and was a member of the First Communion Class. For several years the Huots lived on the Small farm, near Brown’s Lake. In the early 1920’s Raoul and Marie purchased a farm in Section three, Lakeport Township, better known as the Gibeau Farm. The Huots bought the farm from Miss Katie O’Farrell.

Marie used to tell that the Missouri flooded often. In 1906, all roads were cut and fields covered with water. Marie put baby roger in a skiff and got herself and baby to her parents’ home over two miles away. (Now the Marvin home.)

French was spoken in the home until the children went to school. Daughter Marie Gramenz ‘Sometimes we kids refused to talk at all.’

I have Marie Huot’s, ‘Academic French Course II’ by Muzzerelli. In the front of the book is the notation: Mary L Hubert, St Joseph’s School, Salix, Iowa, February 17, 1897.

When Raoul’s father came from Canada to visit his son and family, he objected strenuously to eating at the same table with the hired hands. He missed a few meals! Mr and Mrs Huot were the parents of eight children.

Mr Huot met a tragic death on the night of August 19, 1930. While on his way home from the neighbors, the gasoline tank on his car exploded, spraying the burning gasoline over him, inflicting injuries from which he died shortly.

After Raoul’s death, Hubert farmed the home place for his mother.

Fire took the home on April 15, 1936, on a very windy day. They built a new home in 1937, near the road.

Mrs Huot died January 6, 1976, at the age of ninety-four and is buried in St Joseph Cemetery.

Raoul’s and Marie’s children were: Roger Arthur, born November 9, 1905, died July 31, 1968, married Kathryn Bratton; Marie Louise, born September 13, 1907, married Theodore Gramenz; Hubert Francis, born February 19, 1910, died February 29, 1972, married Betty Barton Johannsen; Raymond Alphonsus, born November 11, 1913, married Loraine Pratt; Maurice Raoul, born March 21, 1916, died at age five); Rosanna Margaret, born October 17, 1918, married Ray Brechwald; Elaine Frances, born August 11, 1923, married Roy Stone; and Clifford Cyril ‘Tub’, born March 5, 1927, married Virginia ‘Pat’ Moore.

At the time of death, Mrs Huot had eighteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.
