Robert Thomas McBride was born October 9, 1917, at Sioux City, Iowa. He was the fifth and youngest child of Philip and Marie (Lahrs) McBride. Their ancestry came to America from Ireland and Germany in the 1800’s when they settled in Sioux City. In 1941, Robert T was united in marriage to Mary Rita Mertes who was born September 2, 1919, the third child of John J and Mary Theresa (Mohan) Mertes. Mary and John’s ancestry comes to America from Germany and England. Her parents settled in Plymouth County where they were farmers.

Robert and Mary had ten children.
Michael Joseph, 1943, is married to Janice Webster and they have three children: Shawn, Susan, and Brian and they currently are at home in San Diego, California.
Robert Thomas, Jr, 1944, is married to Barbara Michalsky and they have three children: Bob, Chris and Amy and they make their home in Elridge, Iowa.
Judith Ann, 1946, is married to Gary Funke and have two children, Angela and David. They make their home in Sioux City, Iowa.
Timothy James, 1949, is married to Donna Kosters and they have three boys: Bret, Brian and Scott. They make their home in Townsend, Montana.
Philip John, 1951, is married to Lynne Thoreson and they make their home in Plymouth County near Sioux City, Iowa.
Mary Margaret, 1953, is residing in Plymouth County, near Sioux City. Brian David, 1955-1955.
Maurenn Ann, 1958, is living in Plymouth County near Sioux City.
Shawn Colleen, 1960, is married to Larry Robertson and they live in Sioux City.
The family made their home at 1726 Grandview from 1955 to 1972. In 1972, they then moved to a smaller home at 1506 38th Street, in Sioux City. The family lived there until 1982. Between October 1981 and October 1982, two of Robert and Mary’s sons, Phil and Pat, built a new home for the family in Plymouth County near Sioux City, Iowa.
Robert was employed at Railway Express from 1945 until 1976 when he retired. He passed away on July 11, 1979. Mary is a registered nurse and is presently employed at Marian Health.
We all feel our roots are tin Woodbury County still.
