Frederick and Frances (Dobbs) King

Frederick John King, son of Joseph and Mary King, was born June 20, 1875, in Shelby County, Iowa. He was raised to manhood in Sloan, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Frances Evelyn Dobbs, daughter of Renrick and Fannie (Pressley) Dobbs, on July 25, 1893, at Onawa, Iowa. They moved to Sloan, Iowa, and to this union two children were born: Lila Fannie and Lloyd Myrt.

Fred was a butcher and learned this trade from his father-in-law, Renick Dobbs. He built and operated a store in Whiting, Iowa, with his son for several years. He also operated several meat markets in Sioux City. In 1931, they moved to McNally, Iowa, where they owned and operated a general merchandise store until 1945. Then they sold the store and retired to their home in Salix, Iowa.

Lila Fannie was united in marriage to Luther Hanson and three daughters were born to this union: Grace Irene, Myrtle Leola, and Lorraine Frances. Fred and Frances raised Lorraine as their daughter.

Grace Irene was born November 29, 1914. She married Alma John Earlywine –now deceased. Two children were born to this union: Gene Alma and Dolores. Grace later married Jess Copple.

Myrtle Leola was born September 18, 1916. She married Leslie Jess Nuzum at Pisgah, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Jerry Lee, Judy Lois and Laura Jane.

Lorraine was born January 9, 1920. She married Mike Otten, and two children were born to this union: Joyce Carmen and Grace Frances. Lorraine divorced Mike and married Bruce Earl Raabe in 1972.

Joyce, born June 20, 1941, married Duaine Vanderlinden; they later divorced. Three children were born to this union: Rick Lewis, Karen Lorraine, and Terry Mike. Rick was born October 31, 1962. He married June Brewer and they have one daughter, Tasha Marie, born March 14, 1983. Karen was born December 28, 1963. She has one daughter, Jessica Ann, born September 11, 1979. Terry was born April 27, 1965.

Grace, born July 12, 1943, married Richard Parrish. They have three children: Rhondelle Jodelle ‘Jodi’, born March 4, 1966, and married to Todd Garthright; Richard James ‘Jim’, born September 28, 1967; and Robert Jeffrey ‘Jeff’, born July 12, 1973.

Fred died in 1953 and Frances died in 1964. They are both buried in the Whiting Cemetery, beside their son, Lloyd Myrt.
