History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

William and Mary (Watson) Metcalf
By Loraine E Washburn

William M Metcalf was born in February 1844 in New York the son of Mendall and Rachel (Munks West) Metcalf. He came to Woodbury County in 1854 or 1855 from Steuben County, New York, by covered wagon. He married 11 September 1867 in Woodbury County to Mary A Watson. He farmed in Moville Township Section 28 and 33. He was a farmer and stock raiser. He lived for a time as a youth in Buena Vista County, Iowa, as he appears as being age 16 in the household of his father there in 1860. From 1867 and until his death in 1905, when he was accidentally crushed by a cow, he farmed in Moville Township. He is buried at Climbing Hill, Iowa.

Mary A Watson was born in April 1844 in New York. Her parents were also born in New York. On the 1900 Census she is listed as having three living children of five births. No further records of her are available to this writer.

The children of William and Mary are: Elvin and Effie, twins born in January 1873. Elvin married after 1900 to Floy Worth, (born 23 September 1886, probably in Woodbury County, daughter of William and Nancy J (Gifford) Worth. In 1981, she was in a nursing home at Logan, Iowa). Elvin is deceased. Elvin and Floy had two children, son and a daughter named Irma.

Effie Metcalf married 1 February 1896 in Woodbury County to Manley J Worth. A brother of Floy, Manley was born 26 October 1869, probably in Marion County, Iowa. Manley was of the Worth family, famous for their apple orchards. He and his son, Clayton, were killed ‘years ago’ when an apple cave fell in on them. Manley and Effie had three daughters also, Gladys, Bernice and Mrs Doris Worth Beaman. Gladys and Doris are deceased. Two of these girls were osteopaths. Doris had a son, and a daughter named Nancy Jane.

Nellie C Metcalf was born July 1877 in Iowa; she married 27 September 1899 in Woodbury County to Zenus ‘Sullie’ Sullivan, born May 1870 in Indiana. He died in 1929, and is buried at Climbing Hill. Nellie and Sullie lived in the Moville area. They had five children: Russell, who married Sigrid ?, and had several children, lives in Sioux City; Leonard, born 16 December 1906 in Iowa, married in 1930 in Sioux City to Willa Lea Tarleton, died 22 March 1981 at Long Beach, California, (his daughter, Carole Lea, married Russell Medevik and had two sons); and three daughters, Fay, Vera and Ethel, all deceased by 1978.

William and Mary’s first child was Charles Henry, born 1868, and died 1882; he is buried at Climbing Hill, Iowa. They also had an infant who was deceased by 1900.
