Wilbur S Metcalf was born September 1854 in Steuben County, New York. He came with his parents, Mendall and Rachel (Munks West) Metcalf to Woodbury County in 1854 or 1855. In 1860 the family was living in Buena Vista County, but in 1870 Wilbur was working on his father’s farm in Woodbury County. At age 20 he was farming for himself. From 1875 to 1877 he went to Washington Territory and worked there logging and clearing land. He then returned to Woodbury County and purchased land in Moville Township. Here he served as a township supervisor, a school director and secretary. He married in 1880 to Hattie E Baker. In 1901 he moved his family to Canada, where they remained.

Hattie E Baker was born 5 June 1859, the fourth child of the nine children of Rev Peter Baker and Maria Metcalf. Peter and Maria were the sister and cousin of Wilbur’s father. Hattie was born in Pennsylvania.

Wilbur and Hattie were parents of eight children: Joanna Blanche, born July 1882 in Iowa; Harlin P, born March 1883 in Iowa; Maria Pearl, born March 1887 in Iowa; Thomas W, born December 1888 in Iowa; Mary, born March 1893, in Iowa; Lester born September 1898, married in 1928 to Nona ?, they celebrated their 50th anniversary in July 1978, at which time he was the only one of Wilbur’s children still living; Howard L, born about December 1884, died 26 September 1885 at age 10 months, 30 days, he is buried at Climbing Hill, Iowa; and Alexander, born December 1895, who probably died young.
