History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Edmund Forsythe Family
By Edna Goldsmith

My parents, Edmund Forsythe and Clara Maude Glover, were married on June 11, 1898. Maude was the daughter of Benjamin F anad Lucinda Ellen Glover. She was born June 18, 1881, in Fremont County, Iowa. Edmund ‘Ed’ Eugene was born April 7, 1877, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in the Sloan vicinity on a farm for a number of years.

Seven children were born to them, namely: Blanche, Grace, Dick, Edna, Donald, Freddie and William. Only Edna and Donald are still living.

After leaving the farm, they moved to Hinton, Iowa and farmed until 1918. On June 19th that year, William was born; Clara Maude died June 29th, when he was 9 days old. We then stayed on the farm until Grandma Glover wanted us to move to Sloan. We bought a home, and Dad farmed some land of Grandpa Glover’s besides, working for other farmers.

We kids were all young, and I’m sure my dad had plenty of worries besides working. He never complained and kept us together.

Grace was married to Walter Black in December 1919; they moved to Salix and farmed with his dad. Two boys were born to them: Robert, June 21, 1921; and William, June 13, 1922. Betty Lou was born December 15, 1923; she lived only one month. They continued to live at Salix for two years. Then Walter got a job in Sloan, with a paving gang, so they moved in with us, and stayed with us until 1925.

Grace was offered a job, as apartment manager in Long Beach, California, by her cousin, Hazel Bays. Walter worked at a few jobs, and was offered a job with Shell Oil Company (one of the largest in Long Beach). He worked there until 1963. Grace passed away October 18, 1963, so Walter retired and went to Montana to farm with his brother. He lived there until he too died on December 26, 1980.

My dad and brother, Don missed Grace and Walter so much, so they came to California in 1928. They stayed with Grace and family until they got jobs. Dad was hired as a carpenter and Don was hired with a termite company.

My brother, Dick, lived in Sioux City and worked as a school bus driver. He married Winifred Leahy, August 3, 1935. They had a daughter, Mary Charmaine, born August 16, 1941. At the time of his death, November 4, 1947, he was living in Minnesota.

Grace was ill for so many years, so she wanted me to come to California and live with them to help out. I came to California on a visit in 1935 and liked it, but went back to Sioux City, for two years. I came back out here in 1937 and stayed with Grace and family. In 1939, I married Earl Goldsmith; in fact it was September 9, 1939. He worked in the Oil fields for many yers. We bought a home in North Long Beach. Three children were born to us: Linda Kay was born January 15, 1941; Larry Gene was born December 20, 1943; and Roger Ray was born June 22, 1948.

Linda was married to Gerald Heane on August 25, 1962. They bought a home in Westminster, California. Gerald works for the Rockwell Airplane company. They have two children: Steven was born October 15, 1965; and Sherrill was born July 30, 1968.

Larry Goldsmith graduated from high school, and then served two years in the Army. He worked for Xerox for a time and now is in real estate.

Roger Goldsmith, after graduating form high school, served two years in the Mariens. He was in Viet Nam until March 1970, also worked as a butcher and a truck driver. He was married to Sharon Keeling on December 5, 1970. They bought a home in Fullerton, California in 1974. They have three children: Mendi, born February 7, 1972; Todd, born May 6, 1874; and Amber, born May 2, 1977. They all live close to us, so we see them real often.

Ed Forsythe died March 23, 1958; he was 80 years of age.

Now that we are retired, we keep in touch with many friends and relatives in Sloan and Sioux City.
