Elijah and Mary (Wiley) Chase
By Nancy EllisElijah Chase, son of Lyman and Jemima (Allen) Chase, was born June 8, 1944, near Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Wiley, daughter of John and Mry E (McWilliams) Wiley. She was born January 25, 1845, also in Bureau County, Illinois.
Elijah served in Company B, 57th Regiment, Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He served eleven months with General Sherman and received a gunshot wound in the right thigh, as the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6, 1862.
Elijah and Mary were married December 28, 1868, Garden Grove, Decatur County, Iowa. There were nine children born to this marriage: Musetta, who died in infancy; Leonard; John H; Clarissa ‘Bell’ (Mrs H McLarnen); Charles Calvin; Nellie May (Mrs Henry Siefke), Gracie Jane (Mrs Claude Quintard); Nora Lorene (‘Rena’ Young); and Capitola L.
Elijah and Mary moved to Iowa in 1872 and to Woodbury County in 1885. Elijah died August 16, 1919, at Lawton, Iowa. Mary died February 19, 1932, at Bloomfield, Nebraska. Both are buried at Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, Iowa.
