Lyman Chase
By Marjorie Ellis

Lyman Chase and his second wife, Ellenor (Gronendyke) Huffman Chase, are buried in the Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, Iowa. It is not known when they moved to Iowa, or where they lived, but descendants of theirs are residents of Woodbury County yet today. Lyman Chase was born 2 January 1812, at Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. (This date does not coincide witht eh entry in ‘Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase’, but the records of Fitzwilliam were lost in a fire and the author evidently gave an approximate date.) Lyman’s parents were Calvin Chase (1787-1827) and Abigail Stone (1790-?). His grandparents were David and Sarah (Raymond) Chase and James and Elizabeth (Haven) Stone. The Chase line has been traced to Aquila Chase who settled in New Hampshire in 1639. Aquila (1618-1670) was born in Chesham, England, as were his father and grandfather. The Stone line can be traced to Deacon Simon Stone who joined a large Puritan emigration from Suffolk in Essex to New England in 1635. The earliest Haven in New England was Sergeant Ricahrd Haven (1620-1703) who died in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Lyman Chase, although born in New Hampshire, seems to have spent his early years in Royalston, just across the border in Massachusetts. After his father’s death his mother was found living in Fitzwilliam, her home town; Lyman does not appear in her householod in the 1830 census. The next record of Lyman is his marriage to Jemima Allen, 4 August 1936, in Putnam County, Illinois. Jemima was born 18 June 1814, in Ohio. The following children were born to them: Lyman J (1837-1900) who married Mary A Shurts and settled in Woodbury County, Iowa; Harriet (1838-?); David W (1838-1904) who married Elvira Sarah Shirts, sister of Mary; Calvin (1840-?); Elijah (1844-1919) who married Mary Elizabeth Wiley and settled in Woodbury County; Mary H (1846-?) whose married name was Westcott; Elizabeth C (1849-1940) who married Isaac Morris Cox; Oscar P (1850-?) who is buried with his wife, Martha, in the Correctionville, Iowa Cemetery; and Alice A (1856-?) who married Robert Bagerow.

The death date of Jemima Allen Chase is not known. On September 14, 1858, Lyman was married to Ellenor Huffman (born Ellenor Gronendyke) who was born January 22, 1825, in New York. She evidently brought two sons from her previous marriage as the 1860 census shows David Hoofman (5 years) and Henry Hoofman (2 years), in the household. Lyman and Ellenor had two children of their own: Jerusha (1859-1946), Mrs John Mackey, who lived in Correctionville, Iowa; and Abraham (1863-?), who lived in Nebraska with his wife, Hattie. Lyman passed away August 30, 1889, at Rock Branch. Ellenor died July 17, 1895, ‘at the home of her stepson’.
