Louis and Hazel (Fuller) Castle

Louis Jefferson Castle was born July 6, 1892, near Mapleton, Crawford County, Iowa. He was the eldest child of four born to George W and Ida E Alexander Castle. Louis’ father was born in Iowa and his mother was born in Indiana. Louis was named after his grandfather, Louis N Castle and Thomas Jefferson Alexander. Louis’ grandfather Castle was from Germany. Louis was a carpenter as was his father.

Louis was married to Hazel May Fuller on August 23, 1916, which was the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of his parents. Hazel was born July 10, 1897, in Ashton Township, Monona County, Iowa. Hazel was the third child of eleven born to George Henry and mary Osborne Wagg Fuller. Her sisters and brothers were: Stella, Maud, William Fort, Robert, Fern, Kenneth, Anna, Edward, Irene and Maxine. Hazel’s parents were both natives of Norfolk, England. Hazel and Louis were married at the home of her parents, located northeast of Ticonic, Iowa.

Louis and Hazel made their home in Ticonic. They were the parents of eight children. Twin daughters, named Mary and Marie, were born on April 3, 1917, and both died the same day. Howard Edward, married Alva R Hurd, was born March 6, 1918; and Raymond Louis was born January 23, 1920, and died June 26, 1920. Emma Dortha (mrs Allen A Anderson) was born October 4, 1921, south of Hornick; and Viola Helen (Mrs Kenneth Garrison, Mrs Edward Hoverman) was born at Ticonic, August 28, 1924. Albert Robert, married Betty M Blackwell, married Donna Plantz VanHouten, was born September 7, 1927, at Grant Center, and Lola May was born at Ticonic, December 11, 1930, and died July 7, 1933.

Louis and Hazel moved to Sioux City in 1942. In addition to being a carpenter, Lous was also employed by the WPA, Kay Dee Feed Company, Edward and Brown Coal Company and Tower Construction Company. He retired in 1957.

Hazel took in washings and ironings to help with the family finances. Her hobbies include crocheting and caring for her plants and flowers.

Louis passed away at his home on July 8, 1976. He was buried in the Grant Cemetery at Ticonic, Iowa. Hazel contines to make her home in Sioux City.
